Feministe has just reinforced how much I never want ads on my blog. I had the dubious pleasure of seeing this ad on the side of the blog; one of the three from blogads that Feministe runs. Normally I don’t pay attention to them, but this one caught my eye (it’s a moving gif) and I had to say I was angry and disappointed when I read the text.
Can someone tell me how buying into the beauty myth and mandatory makeup culture is empowering in any way, shape, or form? Thanks.
Because they’re all natural! And all natural is like mother Earth, and her fertility empowers womyn everywhere!
*sigh* … I used to really like Lauren, too.
Astarte, don’t you think that’s a bit much? We shouldn’t have to agree with each other all of the time to like and respect each other.
That said, I agree that the ad is disturbing. On the one hand, lot’s of women wear makeup, and might be interested in non-corporate, cruelty free makeup. So I guess an ad telling them about it is useful.
On the other hand, let’s face it: The ads are part of what makes makeup feel manditory, rather than like good chose-it-for-myself fun.
