Apparently I’ve had a batch of comments (I’m not sure how many) be marked as spam and therefore not published. I also found out that a group of comments that I approved somehow got unapproved and two of them ended up in the spam bin (which would have been deleted except that I checked because of the comment eating problem).
If you find that your comment doesn’t show up after a day, please at least e-mail me to let me know. I have no idea yet how widespread this issue is, or if it means I should seek another anti-spam tool besides Spam Karma.
Sorry for the inconvenience!
You know, I haven’t had any problems with comments being marked wrongly as spam, though I sometimes have spam that gets through the filter (not a ton, mind you, and better a couple spams a week than legitimate comments getting deleted–the vast majority of the spam is dealt with). SK has different levels of strength you can enable…the security on your install might be too high. You might be able to tweak the settings so that less stuff gets marked as spam.
I didn’t touch any settings besides those I had to for the moderation plugin. And I feel like this comment-eating thing is a recent thing. It may also be related to Akismet and not SK, but I can’t know for sure. I’m wary of relaxing the settings because I still get on average 2 pieces of spam a day that get through the filter.
I sort of want to know if this is a fluke or not. If so, then I’ll be more careful in the future. But, really, what’s worrying me the most is that three comments that I approved got unpublished and two were marked as spam. They were all from the same person, too.
Are you running both Akismet and SK at the same time? That might cause screwy things to happen…
I am. The thought has crossed my mind that they’re giving each other trouble, but it seems odd for it to happen all of a sudden…
According to this new post on Alas, it’s akismet and it’s screwing up on a lot of people’s blogs right now.
Ah, thanks so much for the heads up! I don’t feel so bad now. Just gotta stay diligent (or temporarily disable Akismet).
I can’t even get many of my comments into the approving process at all, Andrea.
