[...] Rubenstein discuss about character design and the role of beauty design on blog entry The beauty myth and character design in relation to Kathrine Isbister book Better Game Characters by Design. He finds similar weakness on Isbister’s argument that I did when I was wondering why models in Vogue are beautiful females in my comment on the book. Based on Isbister argument that would alienate heterosexual female readers. But that seem not to be the case. [...]

[...] After tekanji’s “The beauty myth and character design” post last week, I found Lisa Fortuner’s “Obligatory Power Girl Boob Post” (in her new column, Just Past the Horizon, at Newsarama) particularly interesting. The way she talks about the visual representation of a character as part of characterization, and the images she chooses that show Power Girl’s non-breast attributes are things that I think more artists should see.
While I love CoH's char editor, despite all its customization options, I still, sadly, couldn't get the breast size down below fairly large (and jutting outward: no variety there!) There is a chest slider, but it seems to be from C to huge. I had a char concept which was generally lithe and athletic and not so tall, and the chest was still forced to be fairly sizable. Sigh. (And in similar, although not the same, character customization sadness, it's tough to make a male character that looks 'young' or is just a babyface... well, anyway. That's more of a discussion of comic book art tropes.)

It has been about a year since I tried, though. Maybe I should check when I get home (they're having a free weekend due to a new version release, so I can power it up without paying. The only thing better than research is free research.)

game you might want to check out is City of Heroes or City of Villains... because both games have really diverse character designing things, and you can make your character (male or female) pretty much any body time.

Yeah, City of Heroes/Villains were two of the games I had in mind when I talked about body shape customization (Phantasy Star Online was the other). I would eventually like to pick the game up, but bight now I'm doing FFXI because I have the Japanese version and I can convince myself that playing it sort of counts as studying... ^^;;

I completely agree with everything you said. A game you might want to check out is City of Heroes or City of Villains (this isn't a plug, I promise), because both games have really diverse character designing things, and you can make your character (male or female) pretty much any body time.

I was pleased with Telma's characterization in Twilight Princess. She's a fat woman who runs a bar that is a front for an adventurer's guild and takes matters into her own hands when a male militia won't do their job. Cool character with an important role in the story.

Ashei is the other female member of Telma's guild and one of my favorite characters in the game--she's built strong and wears armor that is actually practical.
