[...] In the above section, one of my complaints was that the editorial content of these sites often inappropriately comments on women’s appearances. The belief that it’s always appropriate to comment on women’s looks is such that many people who read that complaint probably dismissed it out of hand, especially because there wasn’t anything blatantly misogynist in the post, just the offhand comment that the model “looks more like an alien now and more like a regular person before”, which people might argue is pretty tame compared to what many female celebrities get.
[...] Also on the subject of whether feminism is supposed to have something to do with hawtness is another post by Ilyka at Pandagon: “Dove Ad Insufficiently Feminist to Give Columnist Wood.” Tekanji at Official Shrub.com Blog expanded on some of the ideas Ilyka raised, as part of her excellent “Privilege in Action” series, which I can’t recommend enough. Seriously, read them all.
DS: Your comment got caught in the spam filter... I'm glad I checked it. Thanks for sharing, though.

At least I can take comfort from the fact that all of the shots were “day in the life of” rather than pinups.

Yeah, it's somewhat comforting that this time it was two steps forward, one step back instead of the reverse.

This reminds me of a page I was forwarded about women in the Israeli army. Actually, it's a forum thread consisting entirely of women in the IDF just chilling out or undergoing training, with only one or two cheesily posed shots out of the dozens there. It would have been a perfect feminist thread showing competent women in their element, had it not been for the title: "Hot Israeli Women in the IDF." So close...
