What I've realized after several different false starts with Japanese that it's imperative to go to the country for at least some of your education. Practice, practice, and more practice is the only way to learn a language. Some people can learn better than others outside of the environment, but I (for one) am crappy at self teaching. At least this way I have to go around listening, speaking, and reading whether or not I want to.</description>
